1. Starting Systems and Engines

It takes a while to get all the systems up and running on the Black Shark because you have to select a lot of buttons in the right order.

To document this as writen descriptions and screenshots would be very labour-intensive and at the same time very boring to read.

Fortunately, Grim Reapers have created a YouTube video for the introduction to the cockpit and the start of all systems, which we have linked below.

There is also an interactive training within the game with English voice output.  It is very well suited to familiarise yourself with the procedure.  To start it, open TRAINING in the Main Menu, select Ka-50 on the left, select Aircraft Start-up and click START at the bottom.

Our checklist for starting the aircraft is based on the interactive training. Grim Reapers use different procedure, but maybe it helps you.

So have fun watching and learning!

2. Hover Check, Ground Taxi and Take Off

In the following video Grim Reapers briefly explains the Hover Check, how to Ground Taxi and how to Take Off.  It also includes manoeuvre in flight, followed by approach and landing so the same video is in the following lesson as well:

3. Trimming and Autopilot

The trimming and the different autopilot modes of the Ka-50 are a topic that many beginners find confusing.  This is because the systems don't work as intuitively as you might expect.  Grim Reapers goes into detail about the topic in their video.  That is why we include it here:

Further details about the Autopilot Modes are available in the Advanced Course.

4. Landing

We want to show you the landing of the Black Shark. It is in the latter part of this video from Grim Reapers:

5. Shutdown

Abschalten, Bild von kaltokri, GemeinfreiAfter landing you ground taxi to the parking position and shutdown all systems normally (called shutdown or "Cold and Dark"). Please note that we only use a clean shutdown in the Advanced Course. It is not required to pass the optional exam in this course. Nevertheless, here is an overview for all those who want to get used to it right from the beginning.

With the normal shutdown procedure, you could say that it is the start checklist but conducted backwards, almost. Whether you want to bring every switch back into the correct position for the next “Cold” start is a matter of personal taste. One pilot wants complete realism and so will carry out a full shutdown down to the last detail, another may be more pragmatic.

Below you will find a fairly pragmatic list of the necessary steps for this course. A complete checklist is provided in the Advanced Course.

1. Parking Brake Set On
2. Collective Lower Fully
3. Cyclic (Joystick) and Pedals Set Neutral Position
4. ABRIS Off
5. K-041 Shkval Off
6. Generators Both Off
7. INVERTER Lamp Check On
8. Engine Throttle Levers Idle
9. Non Engine Related Electrical Systems Off

6. Grim Reaper’s Tutorials

Tutorials, Bild von kaltokri, GemeinfreiYou have seen that we use the YouTube videos from Grim Reapers.  The reason is simple: Why redo a video when there are already excellent teaching materials available.

Of course you can have a look at all other tutorials from Grim Reapers on the Ka-50 and deepen your Black Shark knowledge.  We will probably use the other videos in the Advanced and Weapons courses, but there is nothing to stop you from studying them in advance.
